Pretty Things by Sara Manning..

I first chose to look at this book because I like pretty things and the title was glittery and the cover had a some daisies on it. Don't get me wrong though, I think this could still be a good read for boys. It is very much a love story but it is unlike any I've ever read before. This story is told through the point of view of four different people. It can be slightly confusing at times but at least they all meet up a lot so it's not like there's four different stories.

It is necessary to introduce you to those characters. The people are:

Brie - She is a bit like a Barbie doll. She wears tons of make up, tight jeans and high heels and isn't the smartest but she is a really sweet girl. She feels she can hardly eat anything because if she does her mum tells her she is a pig and no one will ever love her. She is in love with Charlie.

Charlie - Charlie dresses like an indie/emo hybrid. He is smart, into theater and extremely gay. He is so lovely and he and Brie have been friends since forever. He knows Brie is in love with him but he cannot return those feelings for her. He is in love with Walker.

Walker - He is a player, he wasn't very respectful to the girls he dated in the past. He is in love with Daisy who is a tomboy and isn't anything like the girls he usually dates.

Daisy - She has a girlfriend, she is not a main character. She acts very tough but she has a crush on walker at the same time.

It's basically all about their relationships and their very different lives. It's well written and at the start of each chapter there is a quote from a song, I enjoyed looking some of them up.This book is special because you can kind of see how everyone has a different life and how relationships do actually shape us. They affect the way we see the world and how we see ourselves.

*Warning: If you are not comfortable reading about sexuality and some sexual references this book is not for you.

9.5/10

  1. 9.5 out of 10! It must be good!! I'm pleased to see you warning readers about the themes - we need to be aware that not everyone is comfortable with this sort of subject matter. I'm especially pleased that it motivated you to look up the songs referred to in the book. Did you find any you liked?

  2. Yeah, I did find some really great songs, thanks for asking.

They were by Dashboard Confessional and Death Cab for Cutie.
